Law Enforcement Action on Ferry Causes Delays

This afternoon, February 27, ferry traffic waiting on Bainbridge to board the Puyallup for the 2:05 sailing was delayed about 20 minutes when an automated license plate reader at the ferry lot detected a stolen plate or vehicle as the vehicle passed. Because of the delay, the 5:30 p.m. out of Bainbridge was also delayed. The Washington State Ferries expect the 7:10 from Bainbridge and the 6:20 and 8:10 from Seattle to be running late as well.

The hit by the automated reader on the plate triggered an alert, and Washington State Troopers were dispatched to investigate. Trooper Russ Winger, a spokesperson for the WSP out of Bremerton, said that the dispatched troopers approached the vehicle in the lot and made contact with the driver.

After speaking with the driver, the troopers thought it unlikely that the vehicle was stolen, and they allowed vehicles to board the ferry. But they decided to ride over to Seattle with the vehicle to continue the investigation.

By the time the ferry arrived in Seattle, the troopers had determined that an error in entering the information about the stolen plate or vehicle had been made. They released the driver.
