Police Blotter: 11/30/11

November 29

• Cencom advised Bainbridge units of a 911 hang-up from a cell phone on Madrona Way. Officers responded to the call. A man at the residence said there had been a verbal dispute between his roommates, who are boy friend and girlfriend. The woman denied that anything had happened and said she had misdialed the phone. She then said that she and her boyfriend had been in an argument over a ring he had given her and then has asked her to return. She wanted to keep it since it had been given as a gift. The boyfriend said he wanted the ring back so he could sell it because he needed money to make his ay to California. They both said there had been no violence. The roommate confirmed this.

• The President of the Bainbridge Youth Soccer Club reported damage to advertising banners at the soccer fields at Battle Point Park. He explained to officers that advertisers pay for the banners and donate $1000 to the club to have them displayed. BIYSC is using the money to pay the Park District for their portion of the cost of installing the artificial turf fields. Three banners had clearly been cut.

November 27

• A driver was heading northbound on Diamond Place, going about 25 mph. The driver had just learned that close friend had been injured in a motor vehicle accident. The driver was visibly shaken, took her eyes off the roadway briefly, drove over a mailbox into the rain-soaked grassy ditch, and collided with a rock wall. A tow truck was needed to pull the vehicle off the wall but it was drivable. It was very dark, with wet roads and no streetlights. No injuries were reported.

November 26

• At approximately 10:20 a.m., Cencom dispatched Bainbridge units to a malicious mischief detail at a toy shop on Madrone Lane. The officer contacted the store owner who said the damage had happened between 7:00 p.m. the night before and his arrival at the toy store when he dialed 911. The item damaged was a 7-foot-tall alligator, which sits just outside the front door. The owner usually takes it in at night. It is made of a hard material, like plaster, with the head welded to the rest of the body. The weld was broken and several places on the head and body had scrapes and chips. The owner said he would most likely be the one to fix it but had no idea how much it would cost.

• Cencom dispatched Bainbridge units to the Washington State Ferry terminal on a report of people under the ferry piers. One officer asked the two females he saw to walk toward him. They explained that they are beach surveyors working with the University of Washington and the Seattle Aquarium, as well as public outreach to the community. One of the women explained that, since there was a -3 tide, there were areas she could now see. The officer explained that WSF, the U.S. Coast Guard, and the WSP are concerned with ferry security. The women said they understood but had not known who to contact. The officer gave them contact information for the WSF Operations Watch Center.

• While on patrol an officer could see a person sleeping in a car parked on Grow Avenue. The officer woke the sleeping man who was clearly intoxicated. The man gave the officer his driver’s license. The man said that he and his wife had been at the Harbour Public House. As they were driving away, his wife jumped out of the car and walked off. He said they had not been having an argument but his wife was under a lot of stress. The man said that he had been drinking alcohol from a bottle after getting out of his car to look for his wife. He decided to spend the night in his car since he was too intoxicated to drive.  The officer told the man he could not stay in the car for the night since he was intoxicated. The officer offered to drive the man home. At the residence, the officer found out that the couple were house sitting there and the wife was not there and might have returned to their home. The officer had units patrol the area where the wife had exited the car to look for her. They were unable to locate her.

• A husband and wife on Agate Point Road became involved in an argument and the wife threw a beer bottle, striking the husband in the mouth, splitting open his lip. She was arrested for assault and he as transported by aid car to Harrison Hospital.

November 25

• Officers were dispatched to The 122 at approximately 12:45 in the morning. The management had reported that last call had been announced and the patrons were getting upset. Management reported that there had been a fight in the parking lot a few minutes earlier as well. Officers stayed for about an hour and then left to patrol close by. At approximately 1:20, they were dispatched back to The 122 for a noise complaint. The caller reported that people in the parking lot were loud and obnoxious. The officers parked and were met by a councilmember who lives nearby. She had gone to the location because she had heard a lot of noise. The crowd in the lot began to grow. The officers asked people to lower their voices and leave the parking lot.  The crowds began to disperse. The officers waited as taxis came to take people home. The officers asked patrons still inside the bar to disperse as well. The officer gave two patrons a courtesy ride home and then returned to the bar to make sure things were still quiet.

• Vehicles 1 and 2 headed south on SR-305 at the intersection with Winslow Way, both had a green light. Vehicle 1, in the left lane, turned right, in front of 2, clipping Vehicle 2′s bumper. Turning right in front of traffic stopped for the ferry is customary.

• Vehicle 2 was northbound on Toe Jam Hill at Darden and Brownell when a deer crossed west to east and collided with her car. She went to a friend’s house and had him call 911.

• A bicyclist was riding eastbound on Lafayette and turning right onto Sunrise. The bicyclist slipped on some wet leaves in the road. A witness stated that the bicyclist was a novice rider with not a lot of experience. Medics arrived and cleared the rider.

• An officer conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle that failed to yield to traffic at Day Road and SR-305. The officer found that the driver was intoxicated. After performing a voluntary field sobriety test, the male was booked into Kitsap County Jail.

November 24

• A citizen reported a rowboat adrift in front of his house on Rockaway Beach. The Fire Department and officers arrived and saw a kayaker towing in the boat. The boat had no oars and there was no indication anyone had been in it. It was not registered. The Harbormaster was notified.

• Unit 2, northbound, was stopped for traffic on SR-305 at High School. Unit 1, also northbound, was slowing but collided with Unit 2. The drivers exchanged information. The driver of Unit 2 later called police to report the collision.

November 23

• Unit 1 was stopped at the intersection of SR-305 and West Port Madison Road. Unit 2 was headed northbound on SR-305. A broken-down dump truck was stopped on the northbound shoulder of the highway, completely off the roadway. Unit 1 attempted to turn left onto 305 and was struck by Unit 2. There was sufficient sight distance around the dump truck for the driver of Unit 1 to see on coming traffic. There was no damage to the heavy rear bumper of Unit 1. Unit 2 sustained damage to the left front headlight and fender but was drivable. No injuries were reported.

• A citizen called 911 to report a partially submerged boat attached to a dock off Sivertson Road. Officers located the boat on Hidden Cove Road. The vessel was a Catamaran. The port pontoon had flooded and both motors and most of the cabin were underwater. The officers contacted the Harbormaster who contacted the owner. The owner happened to be a Vessel Assist member. The owner reported that there were about 50 gallons of fuel on board. There was no indication any fuel had spilled. COBI notified the Department of Ecology. The on-duty person for Vessel Assist had the boat pumped out. He suspected that the heavy rainfall and a bad bilge pump had caused the sinking. There was no obvious hole in the boat.

• A vehicle was parked in the taxi parking area in front of the ferry terminal between two taxis. The driver began to back up to leave and hit a pedestrian who was the driver of the taxi behind him. The pedestrian’s leg was pinned against the other taxi momentarily. The driver said he did not see her because it was still dark outside and the pedestrian was wearing dark clothing. The pedestrian complained of right lower leg pain and discomfort in the left lower leg. She was transported to a Seattle hospital for evaluation.

• The driver of Unit 1 headed north on Madison toward High School, looked away from the road and hit Unit 2, which hit Unit 3. Units 2 and 3 were stopped in traffic.

November 22

• Officers responded to a residential burglary on Arrow Point. The victim said that he had arrived home and discovered that several places in his home had been searched and disturbed. The following items were missing: ten dollars in loose change, a partially consumers bottle of prescription meds, a roll of toilet paper, and a cigarette. The suspect had bypassed obvious, high-dollar items. No obvious access point was discovered.

• In a parking lot on Erickson, Vehicle 1 attempted to back out of a parking space. Vehicle 3 was partially blocking the space. Vehicle 1 struck Vehicles 2 and 3 trying to back up.

• Vehicles 1 and 2 were southbound on SR-3905 about halfway between Sportsman Club Rod and Madison Avenue N. in heavy traffic. As traffic started to slow, the driver of Vehicle 1 failed to notice the slowdown and rant into the back of Vehicle 2. The driver of Vehicle 2 complained of soreness to her head and neck but refused aid. The driver of Vehicle 1 was issued a notice of infraction for Inattentive Driving.

November 21

• Cencom advised Fire and Police of a possible water rescue near Agate Pass Bridge. The caller believed he had seen a male treading water under the bridge. On the way to the scene, police were advised by Suquamish Assistant Police Chief that there was a father and son diving under the bridge and that they were not in distress.

• Vehicle 2 was stopped in traffic for a red light at SR-305 and Sportsman Club Rd. Vehicle 1 did not stop before striking the rear of Vehicle 2.

• Unit 1 was parked legally in a space in the Post Office parking lot near Winslow Way. The driver of the vehicle parked and exited to conduct business at the Post Office. As Unit 2 entered the parking lot, the driver observed Unit 1 apparently backing out of the parking space. Unit 2 stopped to allow the vehicle to back up when the driver noticed that the vehicle had no driver. Unit 1, unoccupied, continued backing until it collided with the front of Unit 2. The damage threshold was met. There were no injuries.

November 19

• Unit 1 began entering the intersection of Sands Avenue and New Brooklyn Road, traveling north through the intersection. Unit 1 crossed the limit line of the stop sign and began crossing the intersection when a vehicle appeared traveling west on New Brooklyn. The driver of Unit 1 realized a collision was imminent and back up toward the stop sign to get out of the street. Unit 1 backed up into Unit 2, which was stopped at the stop sign. There were no injuries. The damage threshold as met on Unit 2.
